Black neighbors to picket woman's Confederate flag
Posted 10/15/2010 6:27 PM EDT
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Annie Chambers Caddell, whose ancestors fought in the Civil War, insists the Confederate flag flying over her home is an important reminder of her heritage. But for her neigbors in this tree-shrouded, historically black neighborhood, it's an unpleasant reminder of a by-gone era they'd rather not see every time they pass by her house.

is this good bad or does not matter what you think. thanks everyone G.

Depends really, if she really wants it for her heritage or to annoy her neighbours....

If she wants it for history reasons, then why get offended if no offence was offered? It is taking what is not given which is a kind of stealing  Wink

If she wants to offend, then why take what you don't want  Huh If someone offered you a dog turd would you take it  Shocked

So the best course of action is not to be offended, and take her at her word  Smiley

I am a bit of a winder upper so i probably invite her round for coffee and a chat and get her to tell me about the history, and if i felt she was truely doing it to offend me i'd get myself a flag too and fly it  Grin Wink

I am told my relatives were from the Confedersahhh. I think I was racist in a past life for some reason too... Maybe I'm just a dumb-dumb. I could never see myself fighting pro-slavery in 1000 past lives.

If it was a Northern flag I say FINE, but the SOUTH LOST. That means lose the flag or try again, losers! You shouldn't be able to fly that thing in America, it IS offensive because the NORTH WON. Keep it in your civil war chest of useless old junk where it belongs.

This topic makes no sense on this forum by the way... We are not political or military oriented...

Please make this relate to the Dharma... Oh wait, Crazy actually did...

It's like flying a NAZI flag to me. They lost because they were EVIL and WRONG.

You are talking about emptiness of flag. The same object, colorful peace of cloth, is causing three completely opposite responds. Pride (happiness), rage and indifference.

It seems to me that she's more into provoking, and not into caring for heritage. Unless of course she has no space inside her house to put the flag on display.  By same reasoning pedophiles could (if they feel pride about that heritage), publicly hang and display images of their victims, young Germans could wear theirs grandpas  Nazi uniforms, etc...

AWACS- We will see who has the last laugh on the China issue. Even if that laugh is in our next lifetime... (I pray not)

I see your point though. I know the flag is inherently empty but I let my emotions do the typing there.

reminds me of this story:
Quote
A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: "You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

Well, the Man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yoursu and your hulking son?"

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.

"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them:

"Please all, and you will please none."

Perhaps flying a flag which carries such connotations outdoors is not the best thing to do.  I am all for celebrating your heritage, provided it's within your house, not outside.  For instance, I have a Mohawk warrior nation flag, but I don't display it outside because of the sometimes negative connotations behind it.

If one wishes to exist in a still pool, but their actions make waves, they need to either stop moving, or change pools.

Seems like a reasonable thing to take down a flag that upsets people,..

Should they be upset? Should any prayers be said if all are not the same belief? Little off topic but I have more to add

I don't say Buddhist prayers in a fundamentalist church, or even outside my door, it would drive people up the walls, in private I do.

The rules that people make up about what is right and what is wrong though are really wishy washy. People put up Christmas ornaments everywhere, it's on tv, but if it was about some uncommon or disliked religion you'd have a lot of people complaining and it would have to be taken down. And you know, people can make up all sorts of nonsense reasons for whatever they want, it's really disgusting, I try not to be like that.

On another note, isn't it anti-American to be flying a flag of a crushed confederacy? I mean, what's this lady trying to say? Lets start another civil war for the few, kill the many for it and otherwise best try to screw the rest of the country and anyone whose not white over? I don't know if you guys know this but these people that fly these old flags have been serious trouble makers, terrorists, thieves, abusers of black people after the war, and that flag is their emblem. For some time Northern states had to supply troops and police to keep these anti-American groups from trying to subjugate black people again with violence and false legal persecution. Personally, I never met a person with a confederate flag that wasn't on some drug, meth addict, drunk,...  The main thing,.. the South lost, anyone displaying the flag is messed up in the head, except maybe people in a war reenactment.
