Meet Sloppy Georgie - we rescued this old guy during the storm season here last month, he was in the rain lost or abandoned. He's a pure-bred bassett hound, so a scent dog, meaning if he gets out, he's probably never coming back. Once he gets a good smell he just follows his nose. He either got lost or was abandoned, I live by a highway. He looks like he was on the road a few months. He's a well trained dog, and not the kind of breed you get unless you know dogs, as they are very expensive. However, being old, he might not get adopted.
Since no one has claimed him, he's claimed me. He gives "paw" and leans his head into your side to tell you thank you. After I'd given him food and water, he would eat and then come say thank you. He is a very sweet loving dog. He's become my new best friend, he follows me everywhere, and when I was sick he was going to "take care of me" and he stood by my side and kept watch. I've been treating him for mange, I give him baths and medicine as well as special food that is hypoallergenic. His coat is very bad from being in the streets, and he could barely go to the bathroom when we found him.
Now, five weeks later, he's part of the house, recovering, and the other two dogs, the cat, and our 3 year old daughter have accepted him. The vet said he's about 10 years old but has a strong heart. I don't care how long he lives, he's our friend for good. I've been his main caretaker as mange is contagious even to humans, so he was in the garage for 10 days. He was depressed about his confinement, but now he's feeling so much better.
He's completely housetrained, responds to commands, that is when corrected he doesn't really repeat the mistake. He's a loveable slobbery fuzzy friend. I have a feeling we've been friends a long time and just met again. I'm glad I could help him with a home, food, warmth and love.
