I was particularly moved by a report of the monks asking the people NOT to join their march - presumably that the monks would take the hits and spare the people.

Send out your wishes, chant your mantras - that's the best we, as solitary individuals, can do right now.

These men are magnificent.

Scott

my dad's against the whole thing because the initial reports was that the monks burned cars. But you really have to support the monks because they are sacrificing their reputation for the people. Imagine the traditionalists who criticize their actions with their "monks should not be involved in politics" expectation.

It's like kids fighting over sand castles that are going to be destroyed when the tide comes in anyways.

Whether or not the monks succeed, there are going to be a lot fewer monks when this is over.

I dont have any idea on what you're talking about, and I'm pretty sure you have no idea on what you are talking about either.

so do yourself a favor: whenever you feel like talking about something you have no idea of, click the little x on your right corner and dont post nonsense here. showcasing your stupidity will cause it to get worse.

This situation is like sand castles that will be destroyed by the tide because nothing in this world is going to last forever, they may improve the government, they may save people money, they may do a lot of stuff, but it will all be destroyed anyways, nothing will last. I read once that the Buddha talked about kids destroying each other's sand castles and fighting each other over it, but when the tide came in all the castles were destroyed anyways.

Either way there will be fewer monks. Well this is because if they fail and the government decides to kill the protesting monks, then maybe destroy temples and what not there will be fewer monks. And if they win, well, the economic situation will change and many monks will probably leave monastic life and fewer will become monks. So either way, there will be fewer monks when this is over.

I think you should study Burmese history before blatting out conclusions.  The monks have been in place in Burma for centuries, through thick and thin.  A sudden influx of cash is not likely to send them rushing out for the latest designer sunglasses.

I gather it is also tradition for them to speak up from time to time when the people suffer.  The people are suffering.

I think the situation is both beautiful and tragic.

Genocide occurs in Africa everyday....we all piously look in other directions and pretend that that smell wafting off the plains isn't human flesh.  All of us, East and West.  We court careers in vajra hells for that...

That situation is ugly and tragic and we all have much ill karma to clean up for ignoring it.

Beware of the glib conclusion; it's worse for you than bad LSD.

I hope something good comes of this. But I think no country is going to invade Burma for these people. Worse things than this have been going on in Africa without much intervention.

I hope not. every country that has been invaded for the sake of "peacekeeping and restoring order" results into more chaos. look at vietnam, afganistan and iraq.

I can't agree more. But what's most important are the people's wishes. After all, it's the people that make the nation.

Though we can't do much for them, let us extend our support to them by chanting mantras, praying and doing whatever we can.

Please help to sign the petition on the website below. It will be sent to the United Nations Security Council members.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/tf.php

And to all those who are still criticising the monks, try having guns pointed at you and see whether you like it!!! Please understand that they are doing this out of compassion for the people and it's nothing political... PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY THEIR REPUTATION BY CRITICISING THEM!!! THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG!!!

Hey, if you guys could incapacitate everyone in Burma who holds a weapon with a disease, would you? I'm thinking that would be a wonderful way for this to play out. All the Junta who are holding weapons become very ill, and only the monks will take care of them. The government there could collapse in the time it takes to become sick, and everyone who was against the monks would be on their side not after long. There wouldn't be a bunch of monks dying from this, and much less hate.

Lol what a time to not be accomplished in black magic.

Spiritnoname:

You want to know when you do something wrong?

You do something wrong every time you trot out your latest notion of cute when others are trying to discuss something other than you.

You do this constantly and I see it getting on the nerves of others.

It doesn't bother me.  And it doesn't interest me.  You should understand that too:  when you trot out "cute" you're a bore.

Now this thread is about the monks; it is not about you and it was never about you.  If you want to talk about you, then start a new thread and post away.

Don't be surprised, though, if no one responds and, after a week or so, no one even bothers to look.

Hey, you asked:  let me know when I do something wrong.  I answer:  every time you write about you.   Forget about you.  Totally forget about you.

Then hit the keyboard.

You just might say something.

The soldiers are people too, many of  whom may not like what they are being sent to do. The world is not as simple as you seem to see it. You would need to be very wise indeed to wield a power such as you mention. Who are you to decide who is good and who is bad?
If you stop trying to be liked so much, people, strange beings that we are would like you more.

Yeah, I've been thinkin' about the soldiers too this morning...who knows what their hearts are shouting at them?  To be despised by one's countrymen and spurned by one's monks - that surely is a rough place indeed.

Thankfully, OM MANI PADME HUNG flows everywhere without regard.
