I am somewhat new to Buddhism, after some practice I realize I constantly question if what I am doing is wordly or unworldly. Why is it worth while to constantly try not to have any mental hindrances. Is constantly trying to be free of natural tendencies (such as desires, anger etc.) not a hindrance itself? Thank you.

Hi there, my understanding is that because we are human we will always have these natural tendencies (desire, anger, etc...) I don't think the point of practice is to be free but more so to realise where these tendencies arise from, and what the results will be if we act upon them (karma). By becoming more attune to what our minds do in wordly situations we can counter the natural with wisdom and hence control ourselves to a more stable and happy path.

As for Stupid Yogi... and the dzambala practice, i have been told that his practice is to help us cut out our miserliness, not just in the material sense but also in the emotional sense ie. for others and not just for ourselves motivation. The wealth is just a side benefit of the practice, also an additional benefit for use in helping others.

just my 2 sense...

Hello,
My 2 cents...If natural tendencies can cause some kind of harm to others and yourself; e.g. out of desire, you shop alot and bust your credits and be drowning in debts, then this would naturally be not good for you, right? Obviously you do not want to put yourself in such a predicament. So it is not a hindrance but a kind of precaution to guide us from actions that lead to sad situations or causing negative karma.

Another example is if we are all free to just let lose and be angry whenever, then when someone cuts us off our lane while driving, or said something we don't like and we response out of anger...how pretty do you think that picture will look like? Do do you think the world wld be a peaceful place to be living in? Worth while-NO? And why is it such a hindrance to control yourself from afflictive emotions such as these?...if it is such a hindrance, isn't that a clear sign that your mind knows it is not good for you but chooses to ignore it and keep at it? If it's something good you are doing, your mind wld be happy or you'd be at peace right??? Hence this is where purification practices comes in to help clear away the obstacle of the mind that stops one from doing the right things.

Hope this helped your mental hindrances questions...

Why is it worth while to constantly try not to have any mental hindrances. Is constantly trying to be free of natural tendencies (such as desires, anger etc.) not a hindrance itself? Thank you.

Thank you & take care of the "monkey" mind Wink Cheesy  Wink
