I didn't have anyone ever explain to me what the swastika meant.  I just visualize it as the Buddha's love going out in every direction.  My sandalwood mala someone gave to me has one on it.  But it always reminds me of the dharmakaya. And love.  Because it's always on the Buddha images' heart.  But I have never seen a tibetan buddha image with one, so it might be a chinese phenomenon, but it's an indian symbol.. so I dunno why I am writing this cuz the answer is I dunno.

I dunno. I used to go to the temple and watch the buddha hall while my friend was at lunch.  Sometimes people who were not chinese would come in and look at the walls with all the buddhas on the walls and then they would see the swastika on the buddha's chests and be like "What?"  I just told people who came to the temple and were offended by it that it meant eternity. There are a lot of people in northern california who are politically correct and a swastika is like a bad thing for them.  So I would say something nice. Then they would be like aww.
But then, I am cute so I got away with it.
I really dunno what it means though, in technical terms.  LOL
And I'm not sure i spelled that right either and i am too lazy to google it.
lazy day.

those skulls make me think of where my body is going.  that's probably good.  What does the swass-sticker (I'm sure I'v spelt that totally wrong!) mean in Buddhism?  I have seen it a few times now.  Thanks.

Very interesting food for thought here. All I have right now is a wrist Mala made at Claires' lol. (they sell mainly to teenage girls) It has many maitreya's emblems on 19 beads of some cheap wood. good enough for me. I just started (practicing, and not just reading), and didn't even use one until I figured on my own I better start counting, just to know how many.

I absolutely love the skull/bone mala, it would empower me to practice every time I saw it! Now I know what type of mala I aspire to!

The mala that I own currently is 28 bead, made of an unknown wood.  It was given to my by my adoptive father for my birthday.  Hopefully tomorrow I can go out to buy beads for the 108 that I want to make.

I do whatever I want (respectfully) until somone tells me that I shouldn't. When in doubt ask yourself WWBD. What Would Buddha Do? I don't think he would care if you wore it around your neck as long as your progressing toward true enlightenment. Let your cat wear it... whatever, who cares if you're doing real practice?

Grin thanks for your insight.  I'd rather ask a silly question then act out of ignorance.  I haven't had access to a flesh and bones guru to ask these questions to, so I'm forever grateful for forums like these.

I watched Rinpoche's talk again today about malas.  He mentioned that some mantras are more efficacious when used in conjunction with malas made from a certain type of material.  The immediate example he provided was crystals.  When doing migtsema or Je Tsongkhapa's long life mantra, what is the ideal material to use?

the ideal material is correct motivation   Smiley

Je Tsongkhapa's mantra is so beautifull and powerfull,   that coupled with your correct motivation would bless any mala   Smiley

As some of you may or may not know, I'm getting beads and getting geared up to make some malas.  If anyone from the sangha would like one, lemme know.

Rinpoche is so kind and generous he sent me a nice Mala I will post a pic sometime. I feel lucky and grateful but I don't feel better than anyone else because it's for the benefit of everyone not myself only. In fact when I use it with genuine compassion for others and disregard myself I feel this surge of positive energy go straight up my arm that the Mala is on! Psycho-somatic reaction(a.k.a. only in my head)? Maybe, either way its a good sign.

=D That's most excellent.  I only hope that someday I might receive a gift from Rinpoche as well.  In the mean time, I suppose I'll have to give out some gifts.

Malas I'll be making are combinations of Moss/black agate, snow/rose quartz, pearls and lapis lazuli with handmade tassels.  I wrote out the complete procedure I'll be using to make them and charge them as I'm making them.  Already have a mala?  You know you want another....  Grin

The best gift is giving not receiving.  Wink I would like another one, but only to re-gift it to a couple of other budding Buddhists i may know. Those sound really nice. You should post pics when you finish. And how much you would like?

Nothing.  I'm getting the beads for gifts to people.  If you want a couple to give out I can send a few.

I'm keeping one for myself (as I don't have a real 108 bead yet), it'll be black agate with lapis count stones/guru bead, and a HUGE black/blue tassel... I try not to get wrapped up in the aesthetics, but sometimes I just can't help myself.  Does that make me a bad Buddhist?

Ender, if you know any specific color combos out of whats listed that you'd like for your gifts, lemme know and I'll be more than happy to oblige.  I can't wait to start stringing these bad boys.

Boy I would be forever indebted to your kindness! Also you should send Rinpoche a few! He always knows WHO to give them to which would be the best benefit! If your gonna send 1 or 2 to little ol' me, please don't pass up your chance to offer some to Rinpoche!

Don't even ask about are you a bad Buddhist because you have your OWN preference! Don't be coy! No WAY!

I don't really have any preference, I'm sure whatever you do will be the best. Keep us posted!

I'm excited for both of us.
