All that is said is true. The Guru student relationship is tenous at best. You may be a Phantom speeding on fumes behind enemy lines and the Guru is the airborne mother  giving you a chance to refuel. If you fail you crash. The problem is that you may not recognise your reflection. They mindlink with your Guru allows the recognition of your primordial inner Guru.

and you can potentially mess up your future  if you screw up around a teacher.

Do you mean this in terms of missing out on a rare opportunity to transform or do you mean that you create some negetive karma by not behaving in a guru-student appropriate way?   I ask many questions to a teacher that I have.  I worry that I am not behaving in a way that is considered appropriate in the Buddhist context.  Perhaps I am expected to be more passive...  It would do me no harm to shut-up and just be patient - why am I in such a hurry anyway? It is not my intention to do the wrong thing, obviously.  I remember also when a Geshe came up to me and talked to me and I was so nervous I kind of brushed him off.  OMG!  I feel so terrible to even think of it.  There was even a time when I served the Lama and the monks some food and the monks stepped away from the food and I took this as meaning they didn't want any, so I served the Lama and then walked off with the food.  It is only now that I understand they would not take the food before him.  OMG!  OMG!  OMG!  Poor hungry monks.  I'm an idiot.  Do you think that being an idiot is a karmic defense?  I mean I'm already stuck with life-long guilt... I'm hoping it won't mess up my future lives as well.  All the more reason to learn about the right way to do things so that I don't do this crap again.  Thanks to Tsem Tulku Rinpoche I have some clue of how to treat the Guru and I'm still learning.  If not for him, I would walk all over my chances to have a Guru in this life and future lives.  That's one of the reason's his work is so important .  Thank you Tsem Tulku Rinpoche!!!

Hi Pummy,

I think that your intentions in these maters are the important thing. We are all born knowing nothing about etiquete and just have to pick it up along the way Smiley
I could write you a long list of things i've messed up, a very long list......
Also if a person is helping out feeding monks and lamas, it would be good if the regular staff made the helpers aware of the order in which to do things, so i don't think you should be feeling too bad.
It would have been a good opertunity for the monks to meditate on emptiness too Tongue

Have some compassion and understanding for yourself Wink

Yes, I would agree.  Pummy is quite open. There is a blessing in Tibet that goes something like "May you meet a thousand Teachers". The concern over making selections regarding teachers, and the proper decorum around Teachers in general is cause for ongoing strife. Also, one may have several Teachers along the way to the Root Lama/Teacher, these being known as Sawai Lamas/Teachers. The main thing to do is to relax, do some form of formal practice daily, and to work towards a flexibility of mind that will allow for the conditions within which one meets the Guru to arise. Go with the flow. Also, remember that the Guru is both an inward and outward relationship, and you may have already established an inner connection. Watch your dreams. Pummy, your openness in my opinion is a strong indicator that the Guru is close, and this issue of the outward relationship shall be resolved soon. Once you are there, you will learn the ropes quickly, so do not fear naive mistakes.

Being open also leaves you open to attack but I try not to let that stop me all the time.  Open is the natural way it seems.  I find myself advancing and retreating, advancing and retreating.

I have dreamt about my Lama a few times.  How nice is it to dream about your Lama?  I had one dream that I was walking around his monastry in India with my husband and friends.  He was teaching us and he was ignoring me completely and it seemed like he was doing it on purpose.  When I woke up I realised that I should be so lucky to be invited to his monastry even if he did ignore me the whole time.  I'd love to have the karma to sweep his floor and polish his shoes.

I've had other dreams about him too, some with good signs and some with not so good signs.  It's a different kind of dream when I dream about my Lama but I can't put into words why that is.

Off topic - I also had a dream about a bunch of people from Kechara house all in the back of a kind of stretch-limo type, fancy car.  They were all on their way to a retreat or something and they were travelling through the most beautiful country-side to get there.  They were so excited and happy.

I dream alot...maybe I sleep too much.  I ramble too much also but these are two of my favourite topics.  Any hey - thanks you guys for the advice and saying those things.  It helps and comforts me alot.  Kiss

Being open also leaves you open to attack but that would be because I have the karma to be attacked wouldn't it or the karma for my mind to become disturbed by being attacked.  It gets complicated sometimes doesn't it.

I just read this and I want to eat it up, its so cool: http://kecharahouse.com/main.php?var_lang=en&%20sect=articles&art_id=0023

I like Rinpoche a lot because he speaks straight and honest. It's so refreshing it is beyond words. When I read what he writes just now, it shows me a person who would never BS me or mess up my mind or my spiritual path. Or allow me to mess it up. I feel a bit floored to the ground and amazed by what I just read.  I want that kind of honest person leading the way to enlightenment for all of us.

I feel so relieved to even had the chance to see his holy face.  Really he rescued me from being a slave to BS.

I hope you all appreciate just how wonderful he is.
You'd have to be stupid as dirt to not see how honorable he is.

What he wrote about not saying quit really touched my heart a lot.

I loved it.  It was awesome.

I like in be happy when he says, "someone who tells you the truth, me!"  That's like pretty cool.  I was like.. wow.

I know it was written for ppl at KH and I am 10,000 miles away... but a lot of it applied to my life in ways too.

This post is old but it feels so relevant to me right now. The title seems a bit misleading of the content.
