Hi,
My name is Simon Light. I am a brit living in Southern Italy. Having seen Rimpoche on YouTube (Yes, he will go down in history as the first Lama to use a mobile as a Dharma teaching aid!), I think I am pretty sure that I am going to take the plunge. It's time to take refuge, for real. So, question:
Does anyone know of how, where or with whom I can take refuge in Italy? If so, can they let me know? Does Rimpoche have a centre or connections in Italy?
All the best!
Simon

Dear Simon, Thank you for your post. I have showed Tsem Tulku Rinpoche what you wrote here and he finds you very sincere in your request, and he has agreed to give you refuge. Before that there is some preparation to do. Please contact our Kechara House Dharma brother Andy at [email protected] (you may ask for his number and talk to him through phone) and he will explain to you the proper procedure of taking refuge and other related matters. Also please read up "50 Verses of Guru Devotion" to understand more about guru-student relationship. After you have done all the preparations and you are ready, you may call Tsem Rinpoche, and he will give you the refuge through phone. Thank you for your commitment in Dharma, wishing you all the best! best rgds, Tsemtulku.com Admin p/s We have friends in England who get togther quite often for Dharma class/discussion in their own house, since you are British, you may want to join them when you go back to England, it will be very helpful, and they are a bunch of very friendly and fun-loving people too! Do email Keng Nam at [email protected] or Lily at [email protected], thank you!

Wow!
Rinpoche has agreed to give me Refuge? But why?
I know this might seem to be a little strange as far as answers go, but it is very important for me. Why would Rinpoche want to give me Refuge on the basis of just a few lines in a letter? I am not saying no, please understand this, I am just fulfilling my role as someone in search of a teacher.
How can Rinpoche teach me to meditate when we are so far apart? How can I know that Rinpoche cares when we never see eachother? These questions came to mind after having seen the video on Rinpoche's teachings on the student-teacher relationship. Is it possible to develop sufficient trust over such a distance for me to become in time worthy to recieve higher teachings from him? He himself says on the video that progress in Dharma depends on the relationship as defined in the 50 Verses (Verse 49). If it is possible, then fine, if not, I need to know beforehand (verse 6).
It was because of the problems of distance that I was hoping to find someone in Italy. Have no Masters come here? Not even for the food? Failing that, let's see what happens.
Sorrow for the questions, but I need to do this right.
Keep on rocking,
Simon

Hi Simon, I am so happy that you are considering taking rufuge. And even happier that Rinpoche is willing to do it for you over the phone?? (er.. msn live cam also can?? even better = cheap and got visual ) Even though your concern for your Dharma Life AFTER refuge is valid and important, i feel that you should take the chance to take refuge and not to let too much concerns to hinder your aspiration?? Even though Buddhism is not as easily accessible in Italy, I am sure that there are good dharma centres that can provide you with some basic "training". The intrincity of the Dharma can then be testd out in real life and guidance accepted by posting questions to Rinpoche or sometimes "distant" learning through Wed Videos?? Please forgive me ignorance or presumptions should i err on my understanding of your situation. I hope that your Dharma journey and smooth and yet with some hardship. But eventually Sucessful. May you the Beautiful Italian gain Enlightenment Soon! Peng the Blind Seeing Dog. :p

The truth is, Rinpoche will know everything about you, regardless if you meet him or not. And of course, you will never know if Rinpoche decides to drop by Italy to have pasta.... for now, just focus on your sadhanas and practices, as well as your preliminary (ngodro) practices until you are ready for HYT

Dear Simon,
Rinpoche does not simply give refuge and that is a well known fact, if he is willing to give you refuge he must have seen some connections with you which probably come from previous life(s). If Rinpoche gives you refuge, it only benefits you, he does not get anything, in fact it is a lot of work for him...
I have informed Rinpoche about your concern and he said it is understood and he is not going to give you refuge at this stage yet. So in the meantime perhaps you should read more and understand more about Guru-Student relationship, the meaning of refuge etc...(you can watch the video "Let's Get Serious" on his website). And once you are ready, you may request for refuge again.
Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I think things are becoming clearer.
From what some of you have been saying, it will be possible to take Refuge with one Master, in this case, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, but then it will be possible to receive teachings from other Masters, go to other Dharma centres, learn meditation and practices from other teachers from the same tradition. Is this correct?
Well this makes a lot of difference. The impression I had was that everything had to be done over the phone or on the web.
Have a good one, everyone!
Night night
Simon

Dear Simon, I am so happy that things are becoming clearer to you! You are absolutely right, we can follow Rinpoche but still learn from any person who had anything that can benefit us. I believe that traditions and linages are manifestation but the Dharma are ONE. The taste of Dharma are ONE. And it is the Taste of Freedom. hee.. hee.. Even though you are so far over there, You are my Dharma Brother.. next time if we ever meet, be sure to let me know where's teh best italian food k?? And i will show you the good Singaporean Food places. Ha! Peng The Peng

Hi all, It is wonderful to see more and more people are interested to take refuge with Rinpoche, it shows you care a lot about your spiritual practice. For those of you interested, pls watch through the videos os Rinpoche giving refuge some timje ago at Kechara House, and very detailed explanationa about what taking refuge is: http://www.tsemtulku.com/dharma/teachings/refuge06/refuge.htmThen, those interested in taking refuge should also watch Rinpoche's explanation about what is really invloved in the Guru-Student Relationship: http://www.tsemtulku.com/dharma/teachings/guru-student/guru-student.htmThen, one should read "50 Stanzas of Guru Devotion" (pls google the text) These are the few prerequisites to make you more ready to take refuge. Thank you!!! Darkie Admin

So this is possible(takng refuge)? long distance? Becasue im thinking that maybe after a year or less or even more i will come face to face with myself and decides if buddhsim is really for me, as of now im still studying and understanding it, I know it will take more time. If the wind blows favorably and ill find buddhsim favorable for me i will choose Tsem Tulku Rinpoche as my teacher.
