Hunger Knows No Barriers

Helping the homeless

Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK), formed in October 2006, was inspired by our Spiritual Guide H.E. Tsem Rinpoche. KSK is a non-profit organisation consisting of Kechara members and volunteers who distribute food and give hope to the homeless and urban poor of Kuala Lumpur, regardless of race and religion.

The Society, whose motto is “Hunger Knows No Barriers”, was registered in May 2008 and a KSK Charter was adopted in August of the same year. It emphasizes KSK’s non-religious nature and its aim of contributing towards improving Malaysian society. KSK volunteers come from all walks of life and all races, united by their common goal of helping others.

In 2011, KSK achieved its aspiration of setting up a permanent soup kitchen. Aside from providing food every single day, the building also enables KSK to provide clients with first aid, job placements, laundry facilities and, most importantly, interaction with each person directly through counselling.

On a daily basis, clients are invited to walk in to the soup kitchen to receive a hot meal; on weekends, volunteers take to the streets to deliver food to clients wherever they sleep. All food served is vegetarian so everyone can eat, regardless of their beliefs.

Ultimately, KSK hopes to open a nurture center, where they will provide training and enable the homeless to re-enter society as skilled citizens, transcending all barriers of race, religion and culture.
