Teachings and Initiations

His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche gives occasional public teachings throughout the year at the Dharma center, Kechara House. Such teachings are open to all members of the public.

The teachings and public talks are usually free. However, for certain special or extended teachings, a small fee may be charged. The funds go towards the Dharma center’s upkeep and maintenance. For these teachings, students are required to reserve their seat via a registration process.

His Eminence’s teachings are given in English. For those who prefer listening to the teachings in Chinese, live translation into Mandarin Chinese is available over a wireless headset. Please indicate if you desire the translation service when you register, as the headsets are popular and availability is limited.

All teachings are followed by a question and answer session. His Eminence encourages understanding based on logical thinking and debate, and will answer as many questions as time permits.

His Eminence has given a number of public empowerments and initiations in the past. However, His Eminence has always stressed the importance of learning and practicing real Dharma in our daily lives rather than chasing after initiations and empowerments. As such, His Eminence now only grants closed initiations to those who are qualified to receive them.
His Eminence also gives closed teachings which are by invitation only.
To be informed about public teachings by email, please contact us at care@kechara.com.

What are the basic protocols during teachings and audiences with His Eminence?

Addressing His Eminence
Our Lama is His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche (pronounce T-SEM RIN-po-che). During the face-to-face discourses, such as when raising questions during a teaching, address Him as “Your Eminence” or “Rinpoche”, a term of respect for highly attained Gurus, who are incarnate Lamas.

Approaching His Eminence
It is not respectful to approach the Lama directly. If you have general questions, you may ask them at the end of the teaching/event when His Eminence opens the floor to questions. If you have a private question, please contact the Ladrang Directors to request for an audience with Rinpoche.

Basic protocols

  • Turn off mobile phones, or put into silent mode.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • With a good motivation, make three prostrations to His Eminence.
  • A khata may be offered to His Eminence to receive His blessing. It is also customary to offer a khata together with any offerings you wish to give.
  • Monetary offerings should not be handed directly to His Eminence but placed on the throne table instead.
  • Take your seat on the floor cushions or chairs only when His Eminence invites you to sit.
  • Speak clearly in a polite and respectful manner. Keep your questions short and to-the point, bearing in mind that there may be others waiting for an audience with His Eminence.
  • Avoid laughing loudly or making jokes.
  • Do not interrupt His Eminence when He is speaking.
  • Avoid stretching your legs towards His Eminence or the altar, as pointing the soles of one’s feet is considered disrespectful.
  • When the audience ends, you may bid farewell and leave quietly, if possible with your back away from His Eminence. Do not make prostrations to His Eminence before you leave, it is considered inauspicious.
  • For more detailed , please refer to the Kechara House Code of Conduct
